Recolonised in the wave of expansion immediately during the Calixis Crusade, the planet of Vaxanide was a prime target for settlement due both to its rich and diverse ecosystem as well as the vast stores of mineral wealth that it controls. Not only is the planet itself rich in rare metals used all across the sector, but its moon (Toltex) and many of the other planets were blessed with greater than normal levels of these materials, including several rich adamantium deposits on the moons of the outer gas giants. Following the vast expenditure of resources that was the Crusade, a system like Vaxanide was considered to be sent by the God-Emperor.

Although classified as a hive world due to its huge cities containing the majority of the world’s population and its prodigious manufacturing output, decisions made early in the planet’s history have kept its natural environment in far better condition than many other similar worlds, as the majority of its factories reside in high orbit above the planet. A product of the large contingent of Adeptus Mechanicus techpriests sent with the first colonists, these huge installations form a ring around the planet visible from its surface, and churn out hundreds of thousands of tons of finished goods on a daily basis, to be shipped in great bulk freighters to the rest of the Sector.

Vaxanide has five major cities, with Actinian being both the largest and the seat of the Imperial Governor, Lady Selean. The remaining other four cities; Rheniol, Samarian, Terbian and Thulex, along with the two major economic groups in the system, Orbital and Deepness, each send two delegates to form the System Council, which advises the Imperial Governor and act to further the interests of their home states with regards to Imperial funding and levies. Each city has its own spaceport, as it was deemed necessary to make the shipment of minerals and materials up to the factories as efficient as possible.

The initial large presence of the Techpriests of Mars has continued to this day, with the followers of the Omnissiah having not only large enclaves in each of the five cities, but a trio of orbital facilities that dwarf any of the others in the skies above Vaxanide. Known as the Giants Three, they act as shipyards, and can maintain & support dozens of ships between them, while their huge drydocks allow for the construction of starships up to the size of cruisers without additional support.

As a major manufacturing centre, together with regular cargo-lifts from the planet’s surface, space around Vaxanide is extremely busy and collisions, while rare, are not unknown. Bulk carriers, huge warp-capable ships even larger than an Emperor-class battleship, are regular visitors which in turn means that the Imperial Navy maintain an outpost within the system, and it is a rare time when there are no Navy vessels cruising through space on patrol against raiders or other miscreants.
